E-SULAM GROUP 20
STAGE 1: INVESTIGATION
INTRODUCTION
The topic that we chose for this Service Learning Project is Requirements of a valid will under Wills Act 1959. Will is an instrument that states one's wishes with respect to the distribution of his or her properties upon his or her death. This topic is important on the basis that will safeguards the benefits for our loved ones. Thus, the requirements of a valid will cannot be trivialized as any inobservance of any requirement would render the will to be invalid. Hence, in this project, we would like to identify the level of knowledge of Malaysians in regards to the requirements of a valid will.
For the first stage, we will conduct an investigation to find out the magnitude of awareness about will in our society.
HOW?
VIRTUAL INTERVIEW
A virtual interview session through Webex Meetings was conducted with Ms Chong Yet Loon of Veon Szu & Kok Thye (Butterworth Branch), Advocates & Solicitors. The questions asked were concerning the requirements of a valid will under Wills Act 1959. We also enquired about the sufficiency of the current requirements of a valid will.
GOOGLE FORM SURVEY
We managed to get 50 respondents for the purpose of this survey. Most of our respondents are laymen. Hence, we are able to conclude that these data almost perfectly resemble the reality about the society's consciousness regarding the requirements of a valid will.
PROPOSED EVENT
With regards to the survey, it can be deduced that we are still lacking in terms of awareness on issues regarding will, particularly the requirements for a valid will. Numbers don't lie! Hence, we are inclined to organize a live streaming on Facebook in which we will further discuss and plan, and hopefully be able to educate the society regarding the matter at hand.
Objectives:
-
To ensure that the community are aware and has full knowledge about the requirements of a valid will based on the Wills Act 1959.
-
To clear any confusion and misconception in our society regarding the requirements of a valid will.

We have conducted interview and survey to gather all the necessary data for us to come up with a plan for our service learning. Now that we have a better idea of what to do, we hope that we will be able to achieve our objective in educating the society about the requirements of a will. We will get to it in the next stage.
